Glam Chick Lit: "Celebutantes"

Celebutantes by Amanda Goldberg and Ruthanna Khalighi Hopper is the story of what happens in the Film & Fashion worlds in Hollywood in the weeks leading up to the Oscars. More specifically, the tale involves Lola Santisi, daughter of a successful movie producer, a Hollywood "Lost Child" who tries to find her niche in the wilderness of La-La-Land.

Lola is a self-confessed "Actorholic" who tries to fight her attraction to narcissistic Hollywood males while trying to forge some kind of a career of her own. To combat her "Career Deficit Disorder", she becomes a so-called Hollywood Ambassador for her friend, an up-and-coming fashion designer. This means that she must get at least one star to walk down the Oscar red carpet in one of her friend's gowns on the night of the Oscars. Helping her navigate the shark-infested waters of L.A. are her friends Kate, a talent agent, and Cricket, a struggling actress. This doesn't prove easy, especially since Lola's arch-nemesis Adrienne Hunt is working against her every step, as the ambassador for Prada.

A delightfully recognizable portrait of Los Angeles, written with wit and pizazz, this book is the one you want to grab when heading to the beach. I'd advise against planes, trains, and automobiles, because impromptu maniacal laughter may frighten fellow passengers.

Score: A-
