GlamPlus: Evening Wear for a Formal Party

The Glam Parameters:
Glam Girl Gina wrote asking for suggestions on what to wear to her parents 40th wedding anniversary party, where they will renew their wedding vows. The dress code is formal, and Gina said she would like to find something reminiscent of the 1940s, and she'd also like a hat. Her favorite color is ruby red.

Well, I hunted quite a bit to find a few suggestions. The "Big 4" department stores (Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks, Barney's) all came up pretty bare in the Women's, or Plus sizes. Nordstrom, Lord & Taylor, and Macy's didn't have much to blog home about either for a formal event. But then I struck gold at Bloomingdale's. While these two are burgundy and not ruby, they are both gorgeous and the price tags are great. I also added the alternate colors, in case they strike you. I suggest you run to your nearest Bloomies before the sale ends and these run out, and try these on:

As for hats, I would definitely not try to match the color of the dress, but make the hat as well as your shoes and accessories black. You could either go big:

or small:

This really depends on what suits your face and personality, and what is appropriate where you live geographically. I usually go for the big ones, but different things for different people (and places). Since the occasion is in a few weeks, ordering online might not be an option, and I would suggest that you crack open the yellow pages or google hat shops in your neck of the woods. Department stores might not be an option, since this time of year they tend to be selling only felt & winter hats. Pop into your local TJ Maxx, though — I've seen great hats for a bargain there previously (although again, don't know about this time of year).

Oh, one more thing: When you have your dress, walk directly to the makeup counter of your choice and ask them to help you find a matching or complimenting lipstick. If you don't do it right then and there, in the hubbub of party prep it'll slip your mind and then you're stuck with having to do with whatever you have in a drawer :)

I hope this gives you at least a starting point. Most of all, pick something in which you feel beautiful and comfortable, and enjoy your parents' big day!
