Blair's Red Bow Headband in "Gossip Girl" Episode "Victor/Victrola"

I've gotten over twenty requests over the past few weeks to find a headband similar to the one Blair had on in the "Victor/Victrola" episode. I finally found you one that's pretty similar and won't break the budget:

These are $2.50 at "Uniquely Dodie's, but the store minimum is $10, so browse through their other headbands and accessories as well. Everything is at very low prices, so you can get a few little goodies and still be ahead of the game!

these headbands look NOTHING like the cute one from gossip girl...the one you reccommed is tacky too thick, and way too small of a bow...you suck at life

G.G. said...

Umm Caroline, ok. So you go ahead and buy that Valentino for a few hundred dollars then, and I'll just go back to "sucking at life."

Great Headband!! Good headbands are like good shoes, comfort is key, I hate a headband that gives you a headache. My favorite headband is the Zig Zag Headband by Renee Rivera I find them at headgamesonline.com

So I looked for a headband that had the great proportions this one did and gave up and made my own in black. It was really easy and turned out pretty awesome. Let me know what you think!

Melissa,
Your headband look great! Have you thought of making more all selling them on EBAY. I would love to have one!

Casey said...

Melissa: Wow! Your headband looks great. About the same proportions as Blair's. I second Stephanie's comment, I would definitely buy one like that on eBay.

G.G. said...

Melissa that is fabulous! Any chance that you'd post a "How-To" so people could make their own in any color they need? You could do a guest post here if you'd like. In addition to that, you could make them and sell on eBay for those who are not handy.

OMG great work Melissa! Your headband is such a great replica of the original.

Ever since this episode I have been trying to find a good replicate for the bow headband...the one you posted is nice but I was looking for a thinner band and bigger bow. I got a cute one at Forever 21 in purple satin, but with a small bow, and then for Christmas my friend bought me this one in blue: http://www.bestbuyhair.com/goods_detail.php?goodsIdx=4568

Melissa - any possible way to purchase a red one from you..my gf really wants one like this and i thought it would be cool to find it for her.

Forever21 has tons of those headbands, and they're also about $2 to $5. (:

I have been looking for a headband comprable to Blair's red one ever since I saw it. I eventually got frustrated enough that I decided to make my own instead. I made a lavender one, a green one, and a red one. Although the bows are not exactly as large, they're still very cute. If any of you like them, I'd be willing to make whatever color or style and sell them for a reasonable price.

Here is a link so that you can see what my red one looks like.

melissa
your headband turned out really good ...what fabric did you use??

Anonymous said...

Thank you!
I just used some regular old ribbon lol.
What did you use for your's?

Black taffeta.

I am considering making them if a lot of peopleare interested. For now, here are the directions:

1. I bought a cheap fabric headband. Make sure it doesn't hurt your head! Mine was terrycloth.
2. Then I went and bought 1 yard of fabric. I used black taffeta. When you get home, iron the fabric.
3. I glued gunned the taffeta to the headband to make sure it matches the bow. Make sure the seam is on the inside of the headband.
4. The bow was a little complicated but not as hard as it looks. I cut a strip of fabric twice as long and twice as wide as I wanted the bow to be. Measure it to try to figure out the proportion to your head.
5. Then take the strip of fabric and fold each end in long ways
6. Then fold the two sides in like this opposite way. This way you have no raw fabric edges.
7. Do the same with a strip of fabric about 1 inch shorter than the first. That makes the layered effect.
8. Place the shorter folded piece on top of the longer folded piece and pinch in the middle and form to the bow shape.
9. From there take some wire and wrap half of it around the bow to hold the shape.
10. Place the bow on the side of the headband and wrap the remainder of the wire around it to attach the bow to the headband. Make sure the end of the bow is placed at the center of the top of your head and the other end should overlap about half of your ear.
11. Once the bow is attached well, glue gun a folded strip of fabric (so no raw edges show) around the bow and band to cover the wire. And TA DA you are done!

!! Your homemade headband is amazing. If you ever decide to make a lot of them (in black //red) i'd definitely buy!!

Did you get the terrycloth headband at the same store where u got the fabric??

Hey Melissa

I want to make my GF a hairband like this for her b'day - shes loves bows, and I love Gossip Girl. And I cant find one like it.

Just quickly, when you folded the fabric in, so no raw edges, did u glue it, or sew it?

Melissa said...

I bought the headband at a beauty supply store.

You could glue the edges in, but you don't even have to.

The best buy hair one is the same one I bought for myself in blue (they don't have it on the site, I saw it in blue at the mall but it's the same company) in addition to some at Forever 21.

I made a nice replica of Blair's big red bow headband. It's been selling like crazy at my Etsy shop! I have it available in 9 colors and I take requests for custom colors too.

I will ship anywhere and it's sewn from beautiful red silk fabric. It's gotten great reviews from customers so far.

Check it out if you're still looking for that elusive big red (or other color) bow headband! :)

Melissa! Your headbands are fabulous, would you consider making them and selling them to me? I tried making it myself, but I don't really understand how you wrapped the headband in the tafetta. Did you cut a thin strip and then wrap it around the headband? Or did you take a big long strip and glue gun it to the back of the headband?
I'm not that great at making things,so if you considered making & selling them, let me know!
kisses,
nat.

Aww, I had no idea that GG featured bows like these ^o^ I've made a couple of these giant bows myself and I wear them almost everyday!
I actually have one quite similar to Blair's bow - http://www.flickr.com/photos/repackagedsex/2332567616/
I'm going to be selling them soon on my Etsy, so feel free to shoot me an email if you're interested in commissioning a bow n_n

This headband is from Henri Bendel in Manhattan, or Monelle in Burlington. I bought a few a little while ago so i dont know that theyd still be in stores. but maybe look online. It's a designer whos name is rachel weissman.
So no you're wrong it is not Valentino. Valentino does not even design headbands nor is it ridiculously expensive its about $75, and they come in many colors

Check our http://SighleIllston.etsy.com
There is one similar to blair's red bow as well as many other gorgeous gossip girl inspired headbands...definately worth a look.

H&M has red and black ones for $5.50 each. The bow is huge though so it's totally worth it! :-D
