Liz Claiborne in memoriam (1929-2007)

Liz Claiborne passed away on Tuesday night, July 25, after a long battle with cancer. She was 78.

Liz Claiborne was an American designer, born in Belgium to American parents, who moved back to the States when she was 10 years old. She left her boarding school in Maryland without finishing and returned to Europe to study art. She moved to New York at the age of 20 and worked first as a sketch artist for a design house, then as a designer for several ventures which folded, naturally causing her frustration.

In 1976 she co-founded her own label, Liz Claiborne Inc., which had $2 million in sales in its first year. In 1981 the company went public, and in 1986, the ten year-old company became the first company founded by a woman to enter the Fortune 500 with sales of $1.2 billion.

There is a nice Statement at LizClaiborne.com, only wish it were longer.
